LifeTech OpenQoL – An Open and Scalable Regional Platform for the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Digital Health and Quality of Life Technologies

The implementation of the LifeTech OpenQoL operation constitutes a structured and integrated response to the constraints identified in the RAM (Autonomous Region of Madeira) across digital health, rehabilitation, and quality-of-life support technologies. It assumes strategic importance for the consolidation and projection of the RAM as an ecosystem of excellence and innovation in digital health and quality-of-life support technologies. This operation will allow the national and international consolidation of Madeira as a scientific and clinical benchmark in critical areas of ageing, rehabilitation, and well-being, promoting effective integration between scientific knowledge, clinical practice, and technological innovation.

By implementing this operation, the RAM acquires an operational instrument to achieve the objectives defined in the EREI RAM 2021–2027 within the Health and Well-Being and Digital Technologies and Economy 4.0 axes. It also encourages the creation of new offerings in the Tourism, Culture, and Creative Industries sectors, with an emphasis on health and wellness tourism, identified as an emerging area with strong development potential in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Thus, it promotes a systemic and sustainable transformation of the regional health innovation ecosystem.

The proposed model is based on innovation and scientific excellence, the articulation between research and clinical practice, the creation of critical mass, and the generation of real impact on the quality of life of the population, particularly among the most vulnerable segments (the elderly, people with chronic illnesses, and caregivers). Building upon the institutional structure previously established by LifeTech Madeira, the operation envisions the creation and operationalisation of an open platform for technological experimentation and clinical intervention, structured around the following fundamental objectives:

  1. Digital Health and Personalised Rehabilitation: Development and validation of virtual reality and artificial intelligence systems for cognitive, motor, and cardiorespiratory rehabilitation.
  2. Psychoeducational Interventions and Digital Psychosocial Support: Interactive and multimodal content to promote emotional literacy, mental health, and self-care.
  3. Clinical Training and Digital Simulation: Creation of training environments for healthcare professionals using immersive technologies.
  4. Remote Monitoring and Continuity of Care: A digital, open, and integrated regional solution for home intervention and support for populations requiring continuous care.
The operation will feature its own specialized research and development team, integrating research fellows, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinicians. This structure ensures not only the sustainability of the operation but also its capacity to generate relevant scientific output aligned with regional and international challenges in digital health.
