COST NeuroXRehab – Advancing Spatial Neglect Research Through Extended Reality (XR)

This neuroXRehab project (COST Action CA24123) aims to establish a European and international network of clinicians, researchers, and developers focused on Extended Reality (XR) neurorehabilitation for spatial neglect and related disorders following brain injury. To this end, the project’s main objective is to accelerate the translation of XR technologies, such as Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality, for clinical assessment and treatment, ensuring more specific, intensive, and efficient care. Therefore, the objectives are:

  1. Establish expert consensus and review existing knowledge. To achieve this, the aim is to systematically collect theoretical and empirical evidence, as well as technical and clinical expertise, to guide the use of the latest XR technologies in treating spatial neglect.
  2. Operationalise XR assessment methodologies. The intention is thus to improve diagnostic accuracy for the various secondary symptoms of spatial neglect and differentiate related disorders by developing standardised XR assessment tools and defining common data elements.
  3. Standardise XR treatment implementations. The goal is to adapt conventional and novel treatment approaches into flexible XR environments, enabling highly individualised neurorehabilitation and facilitating remote telerehabilitation across the continuum of care.
  4. Develop data policies and sharing platforms. To this end, the network intends to create unified frameworks for data collection and sharing to support international collaboration among researchers and healthcare professionals.
  5. Plan and design future multicenter trials. By reaching consensus on study objectives and securing necessary funding, the project aims to pave the way for large-scale clinical trials to validate the efficacy of XR neurorehabilitation.
